Bobov Dol, Bulgaria — A wave of public outrage has swept through the small Bulgarian town of Bobov Dol following the repeated mass poisoning of stray dogs, prompting residents to stage protests and demand immediate action from the authorities.
According to a report by Nova TV, the latest incident saw three more dogs found poisoned, just months after a similar attack claimed the lives of dozens of animals. The initial poisoning incident occurred six months ago and resulted in the deaths of 30 dogs and 30 cats.
The community was shocked when it was revealed that the perpetrator had laced minced meat with poison and scattered it near playgrounds — an area frequented by children. The malicious act not only devastated animal lovers but also stirred concerns over public safety.
“I witnessed the animals dying, and it had a direct impact on my health,” one local woman told Nova TV. Her testimony echoes the trauma experienced by many in the town, where the bond between residents and the stray animal population is particularly strong.
In response to the recurring tragedies, residents have initiated a petition demanding accountability and long-term solutions. So far, more than 100 people have signed the petition, which will be submitted to local authorities as part of a collective complaint.
Bobov Dol mayor Elza Velichkova has acknowledged the severity of the problem. In a public statement, she confirmed that there is a functioning animal shelter in the town, though it is under-resourced and unable to accommodate the growing number of stray dogs.
Velichkova, who personally cares for three dogs at her home, said she is working closely with the local police chief to identify and apprehend those responsible for the poisonings.
Interestingly, there is a discrepancy in reported numbers. While residents claim dozens of animals have been killed, Mayor Velichkova stated that around 10 dogs have been confirmed dead. Despite the conflicting figures, both officials and locals agree that the poisonings are a serious issue that must be addressed.
Eyewitness accounts and local media reports have also revealed a disturbing routine: a garbage truck reportedly arrives early each morning to remove the bodies of the poisoned animals, effectively erasing evidence and limiting the chances of an investigation leading to prosecution.
The tragic situation has sparked broader discussions about the treatment of stray animals and the responsibilities of municipal governments.
Residents are now calling for the implementation of a comprehensive spay and neuter program to control the stray dog population in a humane way and prevent future violence.
For many in Bobov Dol, this is not just about animal welfare — it’s about restoring safety and compassion in their community. As protests grow louder and the petition gains traction, all eyes are now on the authorities to respond with urgency and integrity.
