Indian Wells, California — Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov kicked off his campaign at the Indian Wells Open in style, securing a commanding straight-sets victory over Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
The world No. 25 triumphed 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, displaying impressive form and resilience in key moments to advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Dimitrov, who has been easing back into competition this year, quickly asserted control in the opening set. A break of serve for a 3-1 lead set the tone for the Bulgarian, who played with confidence and variety.
Although Borges managed to break back, Dimitrov responded immediately, reclaiming the advantage and closing the set at 6-3 with a series of precise forehands and steady serving.
The second set saw a more intense battle as Borges fought to stay in the contest. Dimitrov secured an early break for a 2-1 lead but faced a severe test of his resolve in a dramatic sixth game that stretched for 18 minutes.
Borges earned five break-point opportunities during the marathon game, yet Dimitrov’s composure and tactical acumen shone through. The Bulgarian saved every break point, thrilling the California crowd with his defensive skills and powerful backhand winners.
Maintaining his lead, Dimitrov eventually sealed the match on his first match point, converting a clinical forehand down the line to wrap up his first career victory over Borges.
Their previous encounter at last year’s Australian Open had ended in disappointment for the Bulgarian, making the win even more significant.
In a post-match interview with BTA, Dimitrov expressed satisfaction with his performance, particularly highlighting the mental and physical challenges posed by Borges.
“I’m already in good shape, but nothing can replace the adrenaline of competition. Borges is a difficult opponent—I’ve played against him before and knew what to expect. There was a crazy game that lasted 18 minutes, and those points were crucial. It was a good test for my body, and the results were positive,” he stated.
Dimitrov also touched on his preparation for the tournament, explaining that he had not played many matches at the start of the year. Arriving early at Indian Wells, he focused on maintaining a disciplined training routine.
“I’m happy that I did everything I had to. I take it day by day, and what matters is making progress,” Dimitrov noted, emphasizing his determination to build momentum as the season progresses.
Looking ahead, Dimitrov will face French veteran Gael Monfils in the third round. Monfils advanced after a tightly contested match against Argentina’s Sebastian Korda, winning 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4). The upcoming clash promises to be an exciting encounter, with both players known for their athleticism and flair on the court.
Reflecting on the conditions at Indian Wells, Dimitrov described the surface as challenging, particularly when it came to finishing points quickly. However, the Bulgarian remains focused on his own game and is determined to push forward.
“I have always been a player who concentrates entirely on myself and my performance. That’s my main priority,” he concluded.
As Dimitrov prepares for his next challenge, his confident start at Indian Wells has certainly set the stage for what could be a promising run in the tournament.
