Sofia, Bulgaria – A drone sighting near Sofia Airport led to flight delays on Sunday night, prompting an investigation by aviation and security authorities, the airport’s press center confirmed.
The incident, first reported by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), did not result in any flight diversions, but the airport adjusted its schedule for safety reasons.
According to officials, the unauthorized drone was detected near one of the runways, close to Sofia’s Hristo Botev district.
It was reported to the Ministry of Interior and relevant aviation authorities, including the National Investigation Board for Air, Water, and Rail Transport Accidents. The board later confirmed the sighting and initiated an inquiry into the breach.
Airport operations were briefly disrupted as a precautionary measure, but flights resumed after safety assessments were completed. Passengers were informed of the delays, though no cancellations were reported.
Security Concerns and Investigation Underway
The presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the airport raised concerns about potential airspace violations and risks to commercial aircraft. Unauthorized drone activity near airports is strictly prohibited due to the dangers it poses to aviation safety.
Authorities are now working to identify the drone operator and determine whether the incident was a result of negligence or a deliberate act. The Ministry of Interior has not yet disclosed any leads regarding the ownership or intent behind the drone’s presence.
“The safety of passengers and flight operations is our top priority. Any unauthorized drone activity in restricted areas is taken very seriously,” an airport spokesperson said.
Regulations on Drone Use
Sofia Airport has reiterated the strict regulations against flying drones near airports and along aircraft flight paths. Under Bulgarian aviation laws, operating drones in restricted airspace without prior authorization is illegal and can result in severe penalties.
In recent years, aviation authorities worldwide have raised concerns over the increasing number of drone-related incidents near airports. Such intrusions pose significant risks, including potential collisions with aircraft during takeoff and landing.
Previous Incidents and Growing Risks
This is not the first time a drone has disrupted air travel in Europe. Similar incidents have been reported in major airports across the continent, leading to temporary closures and flight diversions.
Aviation experts warn that as drone usage grows, stricter enforcement and advanced detection systems are needed to prevent security breaches. Many airports, including Sofia’s, are exploring enhanced monitoring technologies to detect and counter unauthorized drone activity.
Passengers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drone activity near airports. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure such incidents do not compromise flight safety.
The investigation into the Sofia Airport drone sighting remains ongoing.
