Mayor Dimitar Nikolov emphasized the significance of the initiative, expressing confidence in Burgas’ potential and stressing the importance of a well-organized campaign.

“The cause of Burgas being the European Capital of Culture 2032 deserves us to be united,” Nikolov stated. He highlighted that while winning the title is the ultimate goal, the process itself will serve as a catalyst for inspiration and unity among residents.

The foundation leading the campaign comprises five members, with Deputy Mayor for Culture Diana Savateva serving as its chairperson.

Burgas’ bid is supported by years of investment in cultural infrastructure, positioning the city as a hub for the arts and cultural tourism.

Among recent projects enhancing the city’s cultural landscape are the renovation of the Cultural House of the National Theatre of Bulgaria, the establishment of a Center for Contemporary Art housing the Regional Library “Peio Yavorov,” and the integration of historical and cultural sites such as St. Anastasia Island, Chengene Skele, and Akve Kalide.

The city’s cultural program is bolstered by competitive funding mechanisms approved by the Municipal Council, ensuring sustainable support for both state cultural institutions and the independent arts sector.

These efforts align with Burgas’ vision of fostering a dynamic and inclusive cultural environment.

Burgas’ bid has garnered strong national support, including from Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh, who praised the city’s administration for its strategic approach to cultural development.

During a visit to Burgas, Borshosh commended Mayor Nikolov’s leadership, describing it as a model for effective local governance.

“Burgas and its leadership have demonstrated how local government should function, and this candidacy is the result of years of dedicated work to establish the city as one of Bulgaria’s most dynamic cultural and economic centers,” Borshosh stated.

He assured that the Ministry of Tourism would fully support the campaign, emphasizing the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage as key strengths in the bid.

The European Capital of Culture initiative, established in 1985, aims to highlight the cultural richness and diversity of European cities.

The title brings significant economic and tourism benefits, as well as increased international recognition. If successful, Burgas would join the ranks of other Bulgarian cities such as Plovdiv, which held the title in 2019.

As Burgas embarks on this transformative journey, city officials, cultural institutions, and residents alike are expected to play an active role in shaping the bid.

The coming years will be crucial for developing a compelling cultural program that meets the European Union’s stringent selection criteria.

With a strong foundation and widespread support, Burgas is positioning itself as a formidable contender for the title of European Capital of Culture 2032.
