Sofia’s metro system is set to undergo a significant expansion with the construction of 10 new stations, marking a major step towards enhancing the city’s public transportation infrastructure.

Scheduled to be completed by 2027, this expansion will improve accessibility across several key districts, making the metro a more central feature of daily commuting in Bulgaria’s capital.

The new stations are strategically located in three major areas of Sofia. Three stations will be constructed along Vladimir Vazov Blvd. in the Poduyane district, a rapidly developing area in the city’s eastern part.

Additionally, six stations are planned through the Slatina residential area, extending further towards the bustling Tsarigradsko Shose, one of Sofia’s primary transport corridors.

A final station will be built on Pancho Vladigerov Blvd., which will bridge the Slivnitsa and Obelya districts, enhancing connections to suburban areas.

Once completed, these new stations will substantially increase the metro’s capacity, enabling it to handle up to 46% of Sofia’s daily passenger traffic.

This development is part of an ongoing effort by the municipality to improve public transport infrastructure and reduce the city’s reliance on road-based travel, which has been a major factor in traffic congestion.

The project also includes the completion of a nearly finished route passing through Poduyane, H. Dimitar, and Levski residential areas, which is expected to be finished by mid-2026.

Furthermore, the extension of Line 3, which began in late 2023, will run through Slatina to Arena 8888 Sofia and Tsarigradsko Shose, connecting more areas and improving overall accessibility. The entire extension will be completed by 2027.

A key element of the ongoing development is the launch of a tunnel boring machine (TBM), scheduled to begin operations on February 6. The TBM will be used to construct tunnels for the Slatina metro extension.

With the machine set to advance over 10 meters per day, construction is expected to proceed at a steady pace, ensuring minimal disruption to existing services while significantly reducing the construction timeline.

In addition to the Slatina extension, the municipality is also working on a new station in the Obelya district, which will provide vital intermodal connections between the metro, the railway network, and bus services.

Located between Slivnitsa and Obelya municipal districts, this station will offer greater convenience to commuters, linking trains from Dragoman, Kyustendil, and Bozhurishte to the city’s metro and bus systems. This new station is set to open by the fall of 2026.

Once all the expansion works are completed, Sofia’s metro network will stretch to a total of 61 km, with 57 stations serving around 650,000 passengers daily.

This will account for nearly 50% of Sofia’s public transport system, significantly improving the efficiency of commuting across the city.

In parallel with these developments, the municipality is conducting feasibility studies for future extensions of the metro network, including potential lines to the Studentski Grad area and the lower station of the Simeonovo lift.

These studies indicate that Sofia’s metro system will continue to grow as the city plans for a more sustainable, integrated public transportation future.

This expansion reflects Sofia’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and ensuring that its metro network is a central component of the city’s long-term urban planning strategy.

With these improvements, Sofia is poised to offer its residents and visitors a faster, more reliable, and sustainable public transport system.
