Sofia Airport has introduced free access to its Terminal 2 bus parking lot (P8) for tour operators’ buses and coaches throughout the 2024/2025 winter season.

The initiative, designed to support Bulgaria’s active winter tourism industry and facilitate high-intensity transfers, was established through an agreement between the Minister of Tourism, Evtim Miloshev, and the airport concessionaire, SOF Connect. This measure will remain in effect until the end of March 2025.

The decision follows concerns raised by the tourism sector in October 2024 regarding increased access and parking fees at Terminal 2. Tour operators had expressed fears that higher costs could discourage business and complicate logistics for winter travelers.

Responding to these concerns, the Ministry of Tourism and SOF Connect negotiated a temporary relief measure to aid industry stakeholders and ensure smooth airport transfers.

In addition to free access during the winter period, the agreement includes an extended free parking duration for tourist buses.

Previously limited to 15 minutes, the grace period has now been doubled to 30 minutes, with buses permitted up to three free entries per day. This extension will remain in place even after March 2025, offering continued support to the tourism industry beyond the peak season.

To further streamline operations, SOF Connect has implemented an automated vehicle height recognition system at Terminal 2.

This technological enhancement aims to simplify the movement and management of large tour buses, reducing congestion and improving overall efficiency at the airport.

Minister of Tourism Evtim Miloshev emphasized the importance of the agreement, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to supporting Bulgaria’s tourism industry.

“Ensuring smooth and cost-effective transportation for tourists is crucial, particularly during our busiest winter months. This initiative will ease logistical challenges and allow operators to focus on delivering high-quality services to visitors,” Miloshev stated.

Tour operators have welcomed the move, recognizing it as a significant step in alleviating operational pressures.

“This decision helps us maintain efficient schedules without incurring excessive costs,” said Ivan Petrov, a representative of a leading Bulgarian travel agency. “Winter tourism is a key driver of the economy, and such measures ensure that Bulgaria remains an attractive destination for visitors.”

The winter season is a critical period for Bulgaria’s tourism industry, with thousands of visitors traveling to the country’s renowned ski resorts such as Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo.

The improved parking access at Sofia Airport is expected to enhance the arrival experience for international tourists, allowing for smoother transfers to these winter destinations.

By addressing industry concerns and implementing practical solutions, the Ministry of Tourism and SOF Connect are reinforcing their commitment to fostering a strong and sustainable tourism sector.

As Bulgaria gears up for another busy winter season, these measures are set to play a vital role in ensuring efficient travel operations and boosting the country’s appeal to international visitors.
