Sofia, Bulgaria – The Sofia Municipal Council has approved a revision of entrance fees for Sofia Zoo, marking the first adjustment in 12 years.

The updated pricing, set to take effect in February 2025, aligns with recommendations from the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and is part of a broader strategy to enhance visitor experience and animal care.

Under the new pricing structure, children under the age of three will continue to enjoy free entry. Tickets for children aged 3 to 18 will be priced at 5 leva, while adult admission will cost 10 leva.

The zoo will also introduce a “family ticket” option, costing 20 leva for two parents and one child, and 25 leva for families with two or more children.

Additionally, students, including schoolchildren, university students, and doctoral candidates over 18, will be able to enter for 5 leva.

Pensioners and individuals with a permanent disability of 50% or more will pay a reduced fee of 3 leva. Group visits will also see a benefit, with every 16th visitor in a large group receiving free entry.

Zoo director Dobromir Borislavov expressed his support for the new pricing, emphasizing that the adjustments were necessary to support operational costs and long-term development plans.

“The previous entrance fees were no longer sufficient to maintain and improve the zoo’s facilities. The new structure will allow us to enhance the zoo’s status as a leading attraction and provide a better experience for both visitors and animals,” Borislavov stated.

As part of its commitment to improving visitor engagement, the zoo will introduce a color brochure available at the ticket counter. The brochure, offered in both Bulgarian and English, will serve as a practical guide for tourists and first-time visitors while doubling as a keepsake.

Ambitious Upgrades Planned for 2025

Beyond the price adjustments, Sofia Zoo is set to undergo significant upgrades aimed at improving animal welfare and enhancing visitor amenities.

Among the key projects scheduled for 2025 is the reconstruction of the zoo’s western entrance and surrounding areas, designed to create a more welcoming and accessible environment for guests.

Animal enclosures will also see substantial improvements, with plans to expand the living spaces for bears and elephants. These enhancements aim to provide the animals with more naturalistic and spacious habitats, aligning with international zoo standards.

In addition, a major renovation of the zoo’s veterinary clinic and animal stable is planned to ensure better medical care for the zoo’s diverse inhabitants.

In an effort to promote sustainability, the zoo will install a photovoltaic system to reduce energy consumption and lower electricity costs.

Upgraded heating systems for various animal habitats will also be introduced, improving comfort for the animals, especially during the colder months.

A Growing Attraction in Bulgaria

Established as one of Bulgaria’s most prominent tourist destinations, Sofia Zoo became a member of EAZA in 2023. Home to over 1,200 animals from 280 species, the zoo features popular exhibits, including big cats, primates, a terrarium, and an aquarium.

The facility also houses an Ecological Education Center, providing educational programs for visitors of all ages.

With over 500,000 visitors in 2023—an increase from 450,000 in 2022—the zoo remains a key attraction in Sofia. Its recreational areas, including playgrounds and a Japanese Garden, further contribute to its appeal as a family-friendly destination.

As the zoo prepares for these upcoming changes, officials remain optimistic that the improved facilities and pricing adjustments will reinforce Sofia Zoo’s reputation as a top-tier zoological park, attracting even more visitors in the coming years.
