SOFIA—Starting January 9, 2025, Sofia Airport will roll out a new traffic management system at Terminal 2 aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing the overall passenger experience.

The initiative, spearheaded by SOF Connect, the airport’s operator, draws inspiration from established practices at major European airports such as Munich, Amsterdam, and Rome.

The system introduces advanced traffic controls designed to curb improper parking while providing flexible and convenient parking options for drivers.

It also represents a significant step in Sofia Airport’s transformation into a modern European transportation hub adhering to the highest operational standards.

“A Modern Approach to Traffic Control”
Under the new system, all vehicles accessing Terminal 2 will pass through a barrier system that records license plate information.

Drivers will be directed to designated areas, including the newly implemented “Kiss & Ride” zone, designed for quick passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. This zone allows a 10-minute free stop, minimizing congestion and ensuring a seamless flow of traffic.

To prevent abuse of the free parking provision, the system imposes a 60-minute gap between consecutive free entries.

Drivers exceeding the 10-minute limit will incur charges: 10 leva (€5) for stays between 11 and 30 minutes, 15 leva (€7.5) for stays between 31 and 59 minutes, and 20 leva (€10) for each additional hour.

“We are adopting a proven model that has already enhanced passenger experiences at leading European airports,” said Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect.

“This system reflects Sofia Airport’s commitment to becoming a modern, efficient gateway for travelers.”

“Accessible and Inclusive Options”
The new system accommodates people with disabilities, allowing them to park in the “Kiss & Ride” zone for up to 30 minutes free of charge. Tourist transfer buses are also permitted 30 minutes of free parking in the “Kiss & Ride” zone and Parking P8 until March 2025.

After that, buses will face charges of 30 leva (€15) for stays between 31 and 59 minutes and 40 leva (€20) for every additional hour.

Public transport services will continue to enjoy unrestricted access to Terminal 2, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for travelers using buses, trams, or metro services.

However, parking in the “Kiss & Ride” zone or surrounding streets is strictly prohibited, with violators subject to penalties.

“Additional Parking and Resources”
For those requiring long-term parking, Sofia Airport provides three designated parking lots offering a range of pricing options.

SOF Connect has made detailed information about the new traffic system and “Kiss & Ride” zone available on the airport’s official website and in an informational video for travelers and drivers.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize Sofia Airport, aligning it with European standards and meeting the demands of increasing passenger traffic.

As the implementation date approaches, SOF Connect encourages all users of Terminal 2 to familiarize themselves with the new system to ensure a smooth transition.

By adopting this forward-thinking approach, Sofia Airport aims to set a benchmark for efficient airport traffic management in the region.
