SOFIA— The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Bulgaria has intensified efforts to facilitate the safe evacuation of Bulgarian citizens from Syria as the country grapples with a worsening security crisis. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns over mass riots and widespread unrest, which have significantly destabilized the region.

In a statement released on December 8, the MFA revealed that 15 Bulgarian citizens and their families had formally requested assistance in leaving Syria.

Official data indicate that a total of 71 Bulgarian nationals currently reside in the country on a long-term or permanent basis. The ministry has strongly advised all Bulgarian residents to avoid public spaces and remain indoors until the security situation improves.

“Our top priority is the safety of Bulgarian citizens abroad. We are monitoring developments closely and will provide timely updates to ensure our nationals can make informed decisions,” the MFA stated, emphasizing its commitment to identifying evacuation options despite the complex and volatile environment.

Rising Tensions and Risks

Syria has been plagued by heightened tensions in recent weeks, with mass protests and violent incidents reported in multiple regions. The unrest, fueled by economic hardships and political instability, has exacerbated security concerns for residents and foreign nationals alike.

Adding to the complexity, the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly aligned with Al-Qaeda, remains a dominant force in the region.

Designated as a terrorist organization, HTS has continued to influence the conflict landscape, presenting additional challenges to evacuation efforts. The European Union has maintained a strict policy against engaging with HTS representatives, further complicating diplomatic options.

Official Warning to Nationals

In light of these developments, the MFA has issued a stark warning to Bulgarian nationals in Syria, urging them to minimize outdoor activities and prioritize their safety by staying indoors. “The security environment is highly volatile, and we strongly advise our citizens to take all necessary precautions,” the ministry stated.

The warning comes as reports indicate increased unrest in key urban areas, with concerns that the situation could deteriorate further. The MFA has reiterated its commitment to providing guidance and support to Bulgarian citizens facing these challenges.

Evacuation Plans Underway

While specific details of the evacuation plan remain undisclosed for security reasons, the MFA confirmed that it is exploring all possible avenues to ensure a safe departure for Bulgarian citizens who wish to leave Syria. Cooperation with international partners and local stakeholders is being considered as part of the broader strategy.

“We are coordinating efforts to identify secure routes and ensure the safe return of our citizens,” an MFA spokesperson said.

Government Reaffirms Commitment

The Bulgarian government has underscored its responsibility to protect its nationals abroad, particularly in conflict zones. The ongoing efforts to address the crisis in Syria reflect this commitment, with officials working around the clock to adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances.

As the situation evolves, the MFA has promised to keep Bulgarian citizens informed and to provide necessary assistance to those affected by the unrest. The ministry’s proactive stance aims to reassure both citizens in Syria and their families in Bulgaria that their safety remains a top priority.
