Tourist interest in Christmas and New Year holiday packages in Sandanski, Bulgaria, has surged to unprecedented levels this year, according to Georgi Kunchev, a member of the Management Board of the “Destination Sandanski” association.
Hotels in Sandanski, Petrich, and Melnik are reporting near full capacity, with only a limited number of vacancies remaining for the festive period.
Kunchev attributed this year’s heightened demand to the increasingly popular holiday packages that include traditional festive dinners, entertainment programs, and cultural activities.
“In recent years, even the Christmas period, not just New Year’s, sees hotels at full capacity,” Kunchev remarked, emphasizing that 2024 has witnessed a notable spike in tourist bookings compared to previous years.
Three- and Four-Day Packages in High Demand
Blagoy Blagoev, manager of a leading holiday complex in Sandanski, confirmed the rising interest in festive holiday packages.
He noted that most tourists are opting for three- or four-day packages, which typically include breakfast and dinner, with the option to add additional services.
“This format aligns with what Bulgarian tourists are seeking, contributing to Sandanski’s growing popularity as a holiday destination,” Blagoev said.
He also observed a trend favoring longer stays, as these are perceived to offer better value for money.
The packages often include meals and access to an array of entertainment options, which appeal to both domestic and international visitors. Prices in Blagoev’s complex have remained stable this year, further fueling steady demand.
Festive Programs and Family-Friendly Attractions
Holiday programs for both Christmas and New Year in Sandanski are known for their diverse entertainment offerings.
Guests can enjoy dance performances, live music from Bulgarian and international artists, and dedicated activities for children, such as games and film screenings.
This year, Blagoev’s complex will host Greek performers to add a multicultural dimension to the celebrations.
Recognizing its reputation as a family-friendly destination, the complex has designed tailored programs to accommodate families, including animation and entertainment for younger guests.
“The combination of rich holiday programs and family-oriented activities makes Sandanski an appealing choice for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations,” Blagoev stated.
Regional and International Appeal
Approximately 70 percent of holiday visitors are Bulgarian, but Sandanski is also attracting tourists from neighboring countries like North Macedonia and Greece.
Blagoev explained that the holiday packages, starting at 2,300 leva for a three-day stay, are particularly attractive to families, as children under 12 can stay free of charge.
Interest in Christmas packages is outpacing that of New Year’s, with capacities filling up faster for the former. This trend underscores the growing appeal of spending Christmas in a festive and culturally enriching environment.
A Thriving Holiday Destination
With its strategic location, affordable holiday packages, and family-friendly offerings, Sandanski is cementing its status as a preferred destination for festive celebrations.
The inclusion of traditional holiday dinners, engaging programs, and cost-effective pricing has contributed to the town’s enduring appeal.
As Christmas approaches, Sandanski’s hospitality sector is poised for another record-breaking season, reflecting the destination’s growing prominence in Bulgaria’s holiday tourism landscape.
