Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) has introduced a cutting-edge Smartron electric locomotive into its fleet, marking a significant milestone for the country’s railway sector.
The locomotive began operations on November 26, with its first official run taking place the following day, November 27, at 16:30.
Assigned to the fast train No. 3625, which travels between Sofia and Burgas, the new locomotive is set to boost the efficiency and reliability of Bulgaria’s rail network.
This new addition is the first delivery under a contract signed in December 2023 with DZZD “Siemens Tron,” which involves the production and delivery of a total of 10 Smartron electric locomotives.
While the original delivery deadline was set for the end of 2025, the first locomotive arrived 40 days ahead of schedule, a testament to the efficiency and collaboration between BDZ and its partners.
The Smartron model, a modern and advanced electric locomotive, has been introduced as part of BDZ’s long-term strategy to upgrade and modernize its fleet.
This latest addition follows the successful integration of 15 Smartron locomotives received under a previous contract with DZZD “Siemens Tron.” These locomotives have been in operation for several years, maintaining a high standard of service and reliability.
The decision to place an additional order for 10 locomotives comes as part of BDZ’s efforts to replace older, outdated, and worn-out locomotives that have been part of the fleet for many years.
The new Smartron locomotives are expected to enhance the overall performance of BDZ’s services on key domestic routes, ensuring faster, more reliable travel for passengers.
A key focus of BDZ’s fleet modernization is to increase operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
The Smartron locomotives are designed to meet stringent energy efficiency standards, offering both improved fuel consumption and a reduction in carbon emissions.
This aligns with Bulgaria’s broader goals of reducing the ecological footprint of its transport sector and improving the sustainability of its public services.
With the new locomotives, BDZ aims to improve service quality for passengers, particularly on major routes connecting the capital, Sofia, with key regional destinations like Burgas.
This phased replacement of older models will not only increase the reliability of train services but will also contribute to shorter travel times and a more comfortable journey for passengers.
The introduction of the Smartron locomotives is part of a broader initiative by BDZ to modernize the country’s railway infrastructure and meet the growing demand for high-quality transportation services.
The fleet upgrade is expected to help BDZ remain competitive in the rail industry while responding to the evolving needs of travelers across Bulgaria.
As the new locomotives begin regular service, BDZ plans to continue investing in further fleet enhancements to maintain the momentum of improvement across its railway network.
The delivery of these new Smartron units underscores BDZ’s commitment to modernizing its operations and providing efficient, reliable transportation for all Bulgarian citizens.
