Sofia, Bulgaria – Snowfall across Sofia has led to significant traffic disruptions, with kilometer-long traffic jams and hazardous road conditions reported throughout the city.
As of 8:00 a.m. this morning, the Sofia Inspectorate confirmed that snow removal and anti-icing operations were underway to address the winter storm’s effects.
A total of 159 snow removal vehicles have been actively deployed across Sofia, focusing on critical areas such as streets and boulevards frequently used by city transport, as well as major and district roads. These efforts aim to mitigate icy conditions and ensure safer travel for residents.
In particular, neighborhoods including Sredets, Krasno Selo, Ilinden, Vitosha, Ovcha Kupel, Vrabnitsa, Lyulin, Novi Iskar, Pancharevo, and Bankya have received anti-icing and snow removal treatment.
Key thoroughfares, such as Bulgaria Boulevard, Tsarigradsko Shose, and the southern arc of the Ring Road, have also been prioritized in the municipality’s ongoing efforts.
Despite these measures, Sofia’s roads have still proven challenging for drivers. Heavy snowfall has made navigation difficult, and many motorists have reported delays on the road connecting Sofia and Pernik.
One of the main issues causing concern is the use of summer tires, as some vehicles struggle to maintain traction on the snow-covered surfaces. Drivers have been advised to be extra cautious and to prepare for difficult driving conditions throughout the day.
The municipality of Pernik, a nearby city heavily impacted by the snowfall, has assured residents that local roads are being well-maintained.
However, local authorities have urged drivers to switch to winter tires by November 15, which is the legal deadline for tire changes in Bulgaria. This step is critical to ensuring that vehicles are better equipped to handle winter driving conditions.
While Sofia’s roads are still experiencing disruptions, the Road Infrastructure Agency has confirmed that the national road network is being cleared and treated to ensure traffic remains manageable despite the adverse weather.
