Sofia, Bulgaria – Acclaimed Bulgarian actor Dimo Alexiev was detained in the early hours of November 13 for driving under the influence of alcohol, marking his second DUI offense in recent years.
According to the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior, the 39-year-old actor was stopped for a routine traffic check around midnight in Sofia’s Krasna Polyana district, where officers detected signs of impairment.
A subsequent breathalyzer test registered Alexiev’s blood alcohol concentration at 1.49 ppm, significantly over the legal limit in Bulgaria.
Alexiev was then taken to the Third Regional Police Department in Sofia for further processing. The district prosecutor’s office confirmed that the case has been reported to the police for additional investigation, with charges likely to follow.
This incident is not Alexiev’s first legal trouble with alcohol-related offenses. In February 2022, Alexiev was similarly detained for driving under the influence, when a breath test at the time showed a blood alcohol level of 1.69 per thousand. He received a three-month probationary sentence with a three-year suspended term for his initial offense.
Alexiev’s popularity spans beyond traditional acting, as he has also gained recognition through his involvement in various Bulgarian reality television shows.
He participated in Games of the Will, the Bulgarian adaptation of the popular Spanish survival show Desafío, and performed in The Masked Singer in 2019, where he captured audiences as the “Knight.”
Since 2020, he has co-hosted Games of the Will alongside Ralitsa Pascaleva and also joined her in the 2023 season of Like Two Drops of Water.
Despite his recent controversies, Alexiev has a strong reputation in the Bulgarian theater scene. His professional career began with the Stoyan Bachvarov State Drama Theater in Varna from 2006 to 2009, where he earned the prestigious Asker Award in the Rising Star category for his role in Caligula.
He later joined the renowned Ivan Vazov National Theater in Sofia, where he has appeared in critically acclaimed productions such as Miss Julia, Cyrano de Bergerac, and The Murder of Gonzago.
The latest DUI arrest places Alexiev among a growing number of Bulgarian celebrities who have faced legal repercussions for similar offenses, including singer Beloslava, commentator Ivaylo Tsvetkov, chef Andre Tokev, and actor Yavor Baharov.
These high-profile cases have fueled public debate about alcohol consumption and road safety among prominent figures.
While neither Alexiev nor his representatives have issued a statement regarding the latest arrest, the incident is expected to impact his public image.
Alexiev’s most recent legal issues may also lead to more severe penalties due to his history of offenses, as Bulgarian law enforces increasingly strict measures against repeat DUI offenders.
As Bulgarian authorities work to address driving under the influence among public figures, the Ministry of the Interior has emphasized the importance of maintaining road safety for all citizens.
