As early exit polls from the United States presidential election projected a victory for Donald Trump, leaders across the globe reacted with swift messages of congratulations, including several Bulgarian politicians who expressed optimism for a renewed partnership with the U.S. under Trump’s leadership.
Boyko Borissov, leader of Bulgaria’s center-right GERB party and former prime minister, was among the first to congratulate Trump.
In a message posted on his Facebook page, Borissov shared a photo of a previous visit to the White House and stated, “Congratulations to Donald Trump. I am ready to work together, again, for security!”
Borissov’s message appeared to signal not only his readiness to resume cooperation with the U.S. but also his ambition to return to his former role as prime minister, an aspiration which could be reinforced by a Trump administration in Washington.
Political analysts in Bulgaria noted that Trump’s projected win might pave a smoother path for Borissov’s GERB party to form a government, potentially reducing reliance on coalition talks with “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria,” a political bloc seen as more aligned with progressive and pro-European Union policies.
Some experts even speculate that Borissov may have deliberately postponed talks to form a government in anticipation of the U.S. election results, waiting to see if a Trump victory could lend strategic advantages to his political maneuvering.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also congratulated Trump on his expected victory, voicing confidence that their “effective dialogue” would continue to strengthen the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the U.S.
Radev, an advocate for closer ties with both the U.S. and the EU, highlighted the value of a consistent and cooperative approach to bilateral relations, emphasizing security and economic collaboration.
In addition to Borissov and Radev, other Bulgarian politicians shared messages of optimism. Delyan Peevski, leader of the “DPS – New Beginning” party, congratulated Trump, describing his return to the White House as a positive signal for democracy worldwide.
Peevski emphasized the importance of “normality, peace, and prosperity” in both U.S. and global politics, positioning Trump’s leadership as conducive to these values.
Kiril Petkov, co-chair of “We Continue the Change,” struck a more measured tone. While congratulating the Republican Party on its success across the White House, Senate, and Congress, Petkov underscored that Bulgaria’s future ultimately depends on the Bulgarian people.
However, he noted that maintaining productive relations with the U.S. remains crucial as Bulgaria navigates an evolving geopolitical landscape. His comments highlighted the significance of diplomacy with the U.S. in supporting Bulgaria’s stability and development, regardless of shifts in American leadership.
As Bulgaria’s newly elected parliament prepares to convene next week, the potential impact of Trump’s projected victory on Bulgaria’s domestic political negotiations will come into sharper focus.
