In a notable shift in regional tourism trends, Bulgaria has risen to third place in the number of tourist visits to Greece, trailing only Germany and the United Kingdom.
This comes as a result of a significant 56% increase in Bulgarian visitors from the previous year, according to a recent study by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises.
The total number of visits from Bulgaria reached an impressive 2.911 million, marking a substantial boost in tourism between the neighboring countries.
This surge in Bulgarian tourists has catapulted the country up the rankings by two spots, underscoring Greece’s growing popularity among its northern neighbors.
Germany maintained its top position with approximately 5 million visits, while the United Kingdom followed closely behind with 4.8 million.
The overall number of tourist visits to Greece in 2023 reached 36.136 million, representing a 15.2% increase from the previous year.
This growth is indicative of the continued recovery of the Greek tourism industry following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The data, published by 24 Hours, shows that Greece continues to be a prime destination for European travelers, attracting visitors with its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and welcoming hospitality.
Bulgarian Tourism on the Rise
Bulgarians have long been drawn to Greece for its proximity and affordable holiday options. Many Bulgarians opt for the sun-soaked coastlines, especially in regions like Halkidiki, Thassos, and Kavala.
With more than 2.9 million visits in 2023, Bulgarians now account for a significant share of Greece’s international tourism sector.
Local authorities in Greece have observed that the influx of Bulgarian tourists has contributed positively to the local economies of popular destinations.
According to tourism analysts, the ease of cross-border travel between the two countries, as well as favorable exchange rates, have made Greece an attractive and accessible option for Bulgarian holidaymakers.
Growth in Thassos Island Tourism
Further underscoring the increase in Bulgarian tourism, the Central Port Authority of Kavala released data showing a significant rise in passenger and vehicle traffic between the mainland and Thassos Island.
During the summer months of June through August 2024, nearly 1.5 million visitors traveled between Keramoti, Kavala, and Thassos, an uptick that has been attributed to the broader growth in tourism.
This marks a record number of tourists visiting the island, reinforcing its popularity as a summer destination.
Thassos, known for its picturesque beaches and vibrant local culture, has long been a favorite among Bulgarian tourists due to its accessibility.
The Kavala-Thassos ferry route is a key transport link for visitors, providing quick access to the island’s natural beauty and historical sites.
Looking Ahead
With the continued rise in tourist numbers, Greek authorities are optimistic about future growth, particularly from neighboring countries like Bulgaria.
Efforts are underway to improve infrastructure and offer new tourism services in key regions to accommodate the growing demand.
The surge in tourism not only highlights the close ties between Bulgaria and Greece but also showcases the enduring appeal of Greece as a top destination in Europe.
As tourism continues to recover, both countries are expected to benefit from the mutual economic and cultural exchanges that come with increased travel between their borders.
