Authorities were alerted after the child, who had been swimming with five other boys in an unsupervised section of the river, failed to return to shore.

On the day of the accident, the group of boys had ventured into a part of the river that lacked supervision.

According to Nikolay Kostadinov, a representative of the Fire Safety Department in Simeonovgrad, the children were in an unprotected area when one of them became separated from the group.

The remaining boys attempted to find and rescue their friend but were unable to do so. Fearing the worst, they immediately called emergency services, sparking a large-scale search.

The rescue teams, led by Kostadinov, spent hours scouring the river for the missing boy. The child’s body was eventually found the following day, bringing the tragic search to a heartbreaking conclusion.

“The area of the river where the boys were swimming is unprotected, and swimming in such places is strictly prohibited due to safety concerns,” Kostadinov said. “Unfortunately, despite their efforts to help their friend, the boys were unable to save him.”

The exact cause of the boy’s disappearance remains uncertain. Investigators are still working to determine whether the child was pulled under by the river’s current or became entangled in underwater vegetation.

Kostadinov added that the Maritsa River, with its unpredictable currents and hidden dangers, is a hazardous place for swimmers, particularly in unsupervised areas.

This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the inherent dangers of swimming in unsupervised natural bodies of water. Local authorities have long warned against such activities, emphasizing that many sections of rivers like the Maritsa are fraught with risks.

Despite these warnings, the river remains a popular spot for both children and adults seeking relief from the summer heat, as evidenced by the discarded trash frequently found in the area.

The community of Simeonovgrad is reeling from the loss of the young boy, with many residents expressing their sorrow and frustration over the tragedy. This is not the first time the Maritsa River has claimed a young life.

A previous incident involved another child who went missing in the same waters, with the body never being recovered.

These recurring tragedies have prompted calls for stronger safety measures and better enforcement of existing regulations to prevent future drownings.

As the investigation into the boy’s death continues, local officials are urging parents to ensure their children avoid unsupervised swimming areas and to remain vigilant in the face of such dangers.

The Fire Safety Department and other rescue services have reiterated their commitment to protecting the community, but they also emphasize that public awareness and caution are essential in preventing such tragedies.

This latest incident has cast a pall over the town, as residents mourn the loss of a young life cut tragically short.
