Turkey Tops Destination List as Bulgarians Explore Abroad; Transit Visits Boost Bulgaria’s Appeal

In March, Bulgarians embarked on their travel adventures with a sense of curiosity and vigor, as travel statistics surged, marking a notable 19.1% increase compared to the previous year. 

The National Statistical Institute’s latest report revealed a total of 679.1 thousand trips, showcasing a diverse array of travel purposes and destinations, each one a new chapter in the travelers’ exploration.

Cultural and Educational Triumph: Among the various reasons driving Bulgarians abroad, cultural events, sports, and educational pursuits emerged as the frontrunners, experiencing a remarkable surge of 29.5%. 

This inclination towards intellectual and cultural engagements underscores a shift towards more meaningful travel experiences, where each journey becomes a stepping stone in the travelers’ personal growth and enrichment. 

Meanwhile, leisure and sightseeing trips also recorded a substantial 18.6% increase, indicating a continued appreciation for exploration and relaxation among Bulgarian travelers.

Turkish Temptation: Turkey was leading the charge as the top destination, which warmly welcomed 194.0 thousand Bulgarian travelers. The allure of Turkey’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality evidently struck a chord with Bulgarian adventurers. 

Following closely behind were Greece, with 117.1 thousand visits, and Romania, with 66.6 thousand trips, offering diverse experiences ranging from ancient ruins to breathtaking coastlines.

The influx of Foreign Visitors: While Bulgarians ventured abroad in droves, foreign visitors to Bulgaria also saw commendable growth, albeit at a slightly slower pace of 7.2%. This influx, totaling 756.5 thousand visits, underscores Bulgaria’s growing appeal as a destination of choice. 

Notably, transit crossings played a significant role, comprising 33.3% of all foreign visits, highlighting Bulgaria’s strategic geographical position as a crossroads between East and West, a gateway to diverse cultures and experiences.

European Union Influence: European Union citizens constituted a substantial portion of foreign visitors, representing 49.7% of the total. Romania and Greece emerged as the leading contributors within this group, further solidifying the bonds between neighboring nations. 

Meanwhile, Turkey maintained its stronghold among non-EU countries, spearheading visits with a commanding 48.6% share.

Diverse Nationalities, Diverse Engagements: The mosaic of nationalities visiting Bulgaria showcased the country’s multifaceted appeal. Turkish, Romanian, and Greek travelers led the pack, followed closely by visitors from Ukraine, Serbia, and Germany. 

Importantly, the majority of visits transcended mere tourism, indicating Bulgaria’s allure for various activities and engagements, from business ventures to cultural exchanges.
