Kozloduy NPP Commences Transition from Russian to US Nuclear Fuel in May

In a significant move set to reshape Bulgaria’s nuclear energy landscape, the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is gearing up to embark on a groundbreaking transition. 

The plant, nestled in the heart of Bulgaria’s energy infrastructure, will replace Russian nuclear fuel with cartridges supplied by American energy giant Westinghouse. 

This momentous shift marks a pivotal milestone not only for the Kozloduy NPP but also for Bulgaria’s strategic energy objectives.

Scheduled to kick off this May, the transition will witness the loading of 43 cartridges of Westinghouse fuel into the reactor core of the fifth unit of the Kozloduy NPP. 

Tsanko Bachiyski, chair of Bulgaria’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency, unveiled that this transformative process is slated to span four years. It signifies a deliberate and strategic step towards diversifying energy sources and forging new partnerships, thereby fortifying the nation’s energy security.

Valentin Nikolov, the executive director of Kozloduy NPP, shed light on the meticulous groundwork laid for this transition. 

He underscored that preparations had been underway since 2019, following the signing of a pivotal contract with Westinghouse. 

Nikolov emphasized the unwavering commitment to maintaining stringent oversight over the production process, ensuring the quality and safety of the nuclear fuel assemblies.
