The Metropolitan Municipality’s general development plan has been modified to accommodate the extension of Line 3 of the Sofia metro. The modification was approved at the Council of Ministers meeting.

The total investment needed for the construction of Line 3 is BGN 548 million, of which BGN 360 million with a loan from the EIB, BGN 45 million from its funds, and BGN 143 million is taken from the state budget. The Metropolitan Municipality will finance the subway extension project with an investment loan, own funds, and co-financing from the state budget.

It is planned that the branch of subway line 3 will be from Evlogi Georgiev Blvd. at the G.S. Rakovski Military Academy to the intersection of Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd. with Prof. Petar Mutafchiev St. The route will pass along Geo Milev Street, Asen Yordanov Blvd., in front of the Arena Armeets Sofia hall and along Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd.

There will be a six km station expansion and six km to the subway system. As a result, the stations will increase to 56, and the lines’ overall length will increase to 61 kilometres. It is anticipated to carry 16 million more people each year, bringing the proportion of subway journeys in urban transportation to about 50%. One anticipated outcome is a daily decrease of 8,801 cars on the road and a 25% reduction in traffic.

The city’s population will save an additional 8,553 person-hours each day due to the subway’s faster travel times than other modes of transportation. The expansion of the third line of the Sofia subway will reduce dangerous greenhouse gases, fine dust, lead aerosols, etc., by several thousand tonnes annually, which will also be a good thing. The Council of Ministers stressed that it would also help with implementing policies relating to the strategy for low-carbon development of metropolitan areas and reducing the effects of climate change.
