Parliament is holding its final sitting a day after the government of Kiril Petkov had its last weekly meeting on Friday. A no-confidence vote brought down the government in the legislature on June 22, and its political forces failed to form a new government, making snap elections imminent. In Bulgaria, these elections will be the fourth general elections since April 2021.
Chair Miroslav Ivanov said that the Plenary is full-on on the last day of Parliament. In recent months, a frequent problem faced by the legislature is having enough MPs to ensure a quorum.
132 out of the 240 deputies registered for the sitting this Friday. As of August 1, MPs go on a summer recess. The only time when the summer recess is hindered is when the ministers cannot resolve to extend the session.
Following the successful no-confidence vote against the government of Kiril Petkov on June 2, the President is expected to decree the dissolution of Parliament soon after the failure of all three attempts to form a new government within this Parliament.
Deputies are expected to sit for the last time within the framework of the 47th National Assembly. According to the parliamentary rules, from August 1 – Monday, they are on summer vacation unless they decide to extend the work of the Parliament.
However, the President’s decree to dissolve the Parliament is also expected because of the returned third and last mandate to form a government.
Kiril Petkov’s failure to dodge the no-confidence vote led to the announcement of the final sitting of the Parliament. Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria also suggested reading declarations in the last meeting.
On the proposal of GERB, the planned Question Time session was dropped from the agenda, and instead of it, the political parties will read declarations for the end of the session.
