Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the EU, Brussels – Rumen Alexandrov, yesterday (May 3, 2022) communicated with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ambassador Vaqif Sadiqov.

Both the dignitaries held discussions on the several ways of diversifying energy.

The information was shared by the official Twitter handle of Bulgaria in the EU and cited, “Ambassador Rumen Alexandrov spoke today with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ambassador Vaqif Sadiqov. They discussed cooperation between the two countries and in particular energy diversification”.

Bulgaria also receives gas supply from Azerbaijan in a small quantity and is planning to seek more. The gas supply from Azerbaijan means energy independence for the European country at lower prices.

Recently speaking on the matter, the Director of the Center for Management at the University of Geneva, Ventzeslav Sabev, stated that Bulgaria is witnessing stability in terms of gas supply because of Azerbaijan.

“As a Bulgarian by birth, I want to mention that Azerbaijani gas brought peace & stability to Bulgaria in the – context of the crisis with gas supplies from Russia”, the director added.

“Bulgarian firms may be very interested in developing these areas in Karabakh. Azerbaijan’s energy resources hold great importance in the European market”, he further added.

Apart from this, the director has also shown his optimism that the Karabakh region will become a very promising area for cooperation in green energy.

The war between Russia-Ukraine resulted in the cutting of gas supply by Russia to Bulgaria and Poland.

The natural gas from Azerbaijan has been supplied via Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) since December 2020. TAP is the final segment of the Southern Gas Corridor mega pipeline.

The previous year, a total of 19 bcm of gas was supplied by Azerbaijan to the markets of Turkiye and Europe, of which 8.5 bcm was purchased by Turkiye, followed by Italy, which bought 7bcm of gas.
