A 38-year-old Ukrainian citizen residing in Bulgaria under temporary protection was injured in a road accident near the popular seaside resort of Sunny Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
The collision occurred at approximately 1:24 p.m. on October 29 along the Varna–Burgas road, a busy route that connects two of Bulgaria’s major coastal cities. According to police, the motorcyclist was riding a Yamaha motorcycle when he failed to maintain a safe distance while overtaking another vehicle.
During the maneuver, the motorcycle struck an Iveco truck registered in Burgas and driven by a 56-year-old man from the nearby town of Pomorie. The impact caused the rider to lose control and fall onto the road.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured motorcyclist to Virgin Mary Hospital in Burgas. Medical officials confirmed that he suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including trauma to his right back and right lower leg. He remains under observation but is reported to be in stable condition.
Police from the regional directorate of Burgas responded to the incident and conducted a preliminary investigation. Authorities stated that the accident was likely caused by the rider’s failure to maintain an appropriate following distance and misjudging the overtaking conditions.
The police have not yet disclosed whether alcohol or drug tests were administered to either of the drivers involved. However, further examinations and technical analyses are expected to determine if any violations contributed to the crash.
The section of the Varna–Burgas road near Sunny Beach has been the site of several traffic incidents in recent years, particularly during the tourist season when traffic volumes increase significantly. Local authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to exercise caution, maintain proper distances, and adhere to speed limits.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing road safety challenges in Bulgaria, where driver error remains one of the leading causes of accidents. Officials continue to emphasize the importance of defensive driving, especially on busy intercity routes.
Police have not filed charges at this stage but said the investigation remains open pending further review of evidence from the crash scene.
