Bulgaria’s leading tennis players, Grigor Dimitrov and Viktoriya Tomova, have held onto their positions in the latest global rankings as they gear up for the 2024 tennis season. The new season kicks off at the end of December in Brisbane, Australia, where both athletes will compete.
Grigor Dimitrov Solid in ATP Top 10
Grigor Dimitrov remains ranked 10th in the ATP rankings, a position he has defended since re-entering the top 10 on April 1. The winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for 2023, Dimitrov has demonstrated consistency throughout the year.
Among Bulgarian men, Adrian Andreev is the next highest-ranked player at No. 217, followed by Dimitar Kuzmanov at No. 337, Petr Nesterov at No. 437, and Yanaki Milev at No. 497.
Meanwhile, Iliyan Radulov has achieved a career milestone by climbing 30 spots to reach No. 540. Radulov’s leap in the rankings comes after he earned eight points for reaching the final in Madrid on December 8.
Yannick Sinner of Italy retains the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings, leading into the new season.
Viktoriya Tomova Leads Bulgarian Women
In the WTA rankings, Viktoriya Tomova continues to shine as Bulgaria’s top female player, holding steady at 53rd. The 28-year-old has been a consistent performer, earning her position as a key figure in Bulgarian tennis.
Joining Tomova in the top 500 are Gergana Topalova at No. 342, Lia Karatancheva at No. 348, and Izabella Shinikova at No. 367. Their rankings reflect the depth of Bulgarian talent on the women’s circuit.
Promising young players are also making their mark. Rositsa Dencheva, 17, surged 36 places to a career-high No. 502 following an impressive string of performances.
Another rising star, Denislava Glushkova, improved her ranking by eight positions to 542nd after her victory at the Antalya tournament earlier this month.
Arina Sabalenka of Belarus continues to dominate the WTA rankings, holding onto the No. 1 position heading into 2024.
Preparations Underway for Brisbane
Both Dimitrov and Tomova are set to begin their campaigns in Brisbane, where they will compete against some of the best players in the world.
For Dimitrov, the season opener is an opportunity to solidify his place among the elite, while Tomova aims to break into the WTA top 50.
The performances of Bulgaria’s rising stars, including Radulov, Dencheva, and Glushkova, also indicate a promising future for the nation in tennis. Their recent successes highlight the growing depth in Bulgarian tennis across both the men’s and women’s circuits.
As the new season approaches, Bulgarian players at all levels are poised to build on their achievements, representing their country on the global stage.
