Sofia, Bulgaria – A revamped train schedule by Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) came into effect on December 15, introducing new routes and shorter travel times aimed at improving connectivity to densely populated areas and optimizing passenger convenience.

The updated timetable will impact several major routes, including Sofia-Burgas, Ruse-Burgas, Plovdiv-Varna, and Vidin-Sofia. BDZ has also announced that passenger transport will be conducted by a fleet of 503 trains, comprising 79 fast trains, 122 passenger trains, and 302 suburban passenger trains.

Key Changes in the New Schedule

One of the most notable changes is on the Sofia-Burgas route. The afternoon fast train departing Sofia Central Station at 4:40 PM will now complete its journey to Burgas in 6 hours and 8 minutes, arriving at 10:48 PM. The route follows the Sub-Balkan Railway Line, offering scenic views and an expedited travel time that is expected to benefit commuters and tourists alike.

A new connection between Ruse and Burgas has also been introduced, providing an essential link between northern and southeastern Bulgaria. This service operates as a passenger train with a single transfer at Dabovo station. The entire journey from Ruse to Burgas will take 8 hours, marking a significant improvement in accessibility for travelers from Ruse to the Black Sea coast.

Additionally, a new rail service has been launched between Plovdiv and Varna. The connection requires two transfers – at Dimitrovgrad and Gorna Oryahovitsa – allowing passengers to traverse central and northeastern Bulgaria more efficiently.

On the Vidin-Sofia line, the departure time for the fast train from Vidin has been rescheduled to 4:00 PM, allowing passengers to reach Sofia by 9:37 PM. The earlier departure aims to accommodate the needs of commuters traveling from the northwestern city to the capital.

Expanding Rail Connectivity

BDZ has emphasized that these changes are part of broader efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of Bulgaria’s rail services. The introduction of new routes and improved travel times reflects BDZ’s commitment to addressing passenger demands and enhancing regional connectivity.

The Sub-Balkan Railway Line, for instance, plays a crucial role in connecting major urban hubs while offering travelers a faster and more convenient alternative to road transport. Similarly, the Ruse-Burgas and Plovdiv-Varna routes aim to bridge key economic and tourist regions of the country.

Passenger Services on the Rise

The fleet of 503 trains includes 79 fast trains, which are designed to cover long distances in minimal time, and 122 passenger trains serving medium-distance routes. For shorter commutes, 302 suburban passenger trains will continue to operate, ensuring comprehensive coverage for urban and rural areas alike.

BDZ anticipates that the new schedule will attract more passengers by offering improved services and shorter travel times. The changes align with the company’s broader strategy of modernizing Bulgaria’s rail infrastructure and enhancing its role in sustainable transportation.

Looking Ahead

As the new schedule takes effect, passengers are encouraged to check updated timetables on the BDZ website or through official communication channels. The enhancements underscore BDZ’s mission to make train travel an efficient and preferred mode of transportation across Bulgaria.
