SOFIA – Bulgaria has taken another significant step toward its long-anticipated Schengen membership, with Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, Director of the Border Police Directorate, praising recent advancements in border security.
His remarks came during a ceremony marking the handover of 80 new off-road vehicles to the Border Police Directorate on Thursday.
Zlatanov underscored the importance of the upgrades in the agency’s operations, calling them “a milestone in Bulgaria’s efforts to meet Schengen criteria.”
He credited the progress made over the past two years as pivotal to Bulgaria’s diplomatic and political push for full inclusion in the Schengen area.
The new fleet of vehicles, designed to navigate Bulgaria’s challenging border terrains, will strengthen patrol capabilities and reinforce security measures against illegal migration and organized crime.
Improved Border Security and Sacrifices Acknowledged
The Chief Commissioner paid tribute to law enforcement officers who have made tremendous sacrifices in combating illegal migration, some of whom lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Their dedication and courage have made a real difference in protecting Bulgaria’s borders,” Zlatanov said.
He highlighted a remarkable 70% drop in illegal migration this year compared to the previous year, attributing the success to increased vigilance, advanced technology, and the steadfast commitment of border police officers.
This achievement, he noted, has made it increasingly difficult for traffickers to exploit Bulgaria as a gateway to the European Union.
Crackdown on Organized Crime
In addition to improved border management, Zlatanov pointed to recent successes in cracking down on organized crime as further evidence of Bulgaria’s readiness for Schengen inclusion.
Earlier this month, law enforcement dismantled two organized crime groups involved in human trafficking. The operations led to the arrest of the groups’ leaders and key accomplices, disrupting trafficking networks operating along Bulgaria’s borders.
“These operations demonstrate Bulgaria’s resolve to address illegal migration at its roots and maintain a high standard of border security,” Zlatanov said.
He added that such efforts send a strong signal to the international community about Bulgaria’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations as a future Schengen member.
Diplomatic Momentum Builds
Bulgaria’s bid for Schengen membership has long been a focus of diplomatic efforts. Over the past two years, the country has introduced reforms and measures to align its border management practices with European standards.
The European Commission has recognized these efforts, though challenges remain as member states deliberate on granting full Schengen access to Bulgaria.
Zlatanov expressed optimism about the progress, stating, “We are on the right path, and the tangible improvements in border security will strengthen our case for Schengen inclusion.”
A Step Forward for Bulgaria
The addition of 80 off-road vehicles is seen as a major boost to the Border Police Directorate’s capacity to patrol Bulgaria’s extensive and diverse borders, including its challenging mountainous and forested areas.
These enhancements come at a critical time as Bulgaria works to maintain the momentum in its Schengen ambitions.
Zlatanov’s comments and the upgraded resources highlight the country’s ongoing commitment to secure its borders, combat illegal migration, and strengthen ties with the European Union.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Bulgaria’s leadership remains hopeful that its progress will soon culminate in full Schengen membership.
