From November 15 to March 1, Bulgarian motorists are legally required to equip their vehicles with winter tires, a measure designed to enhance road safety during the colder months. Beginning today, authorities are stepping up enforcement as part of the nationwide “Winter” traffic safety campaign.
Inspector Radoslav Markov from the Montana Regional Police Directorate outlined the legal requirements, stating, “Drivers must use tires with a tread depth of at least 4 millimeters or more.” Failure to comply with these regulations will result in a 50 BGN fine.
Last-Minute Rush for Compliance
In Montana, a surge in demand for winter tires has been observed in recent days. Local tire dealer and installer Nikolay Kolov attributes the procrastination to unusually warm weather in the weeks leading up to the deadline.
“Up until a week ago, the weather was very warm, so drivers were waiting to avoid wearing out their winter tires. Now, most prefer to buy new tires,” Kolov said.
However, Kolov warns drivers to pay attention not only to tread depth but also to the age of their tires. “If a tire is over five years old from its production date, it performs differently on asphalt or snow,” he explained.
Experienced Drivers Share Their Advice
Veteran drivers like Rumen, who boasts over 45 years of experience navigating Bulgaria’s roads, are already prepared. Rumen advocates for early preparation and careful driving during the winter season.
“I already have my winter tires on. Speed must always be adjusted to road conditions, and extra attention is required during winter,” he advised.
His comments echo the guidance of traffic authorities, who stress the importance of adapting driving habits to seasonal challenges, such as reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.
The Dangers of Inadequate Tires
Kolov also cautioned against relying on summer tires during winter conditions, even if they appear to have sufficient tread.
“A summer tire with good tread is very dangerous in winter. The tire must strictly be a winter tire,” he said, emphasizing that the specialized composition of winter tires provides better traction and safety on icy and snowy roads.
Drivers are encouraged to check their tire tread depth regularly and replace tires that no longer meet the legal requirements.
Strict Penalties to Ensure Compliance
To ensure road safety, Bulgarian authorities have begun issuing fines to drivers who fail to comply with the winter tire mandate. Those caught without proper winter tires or with insufficient tread depth will face a penalty of 50 BGN.
The campaign, which involves increased road checks and public awareness initiatives, aims to reduce accidents and improve traffic safety during the winter season.
Safety First
As the colder months set in, the need for proper vehicle equipment becomes critical. With fines now in place, authorities are urging drivers to prioritize safety and comply with the winter tire regulations.
By taking these precautions, drivers can not only avoid penalties but also contribute to safer roads for all travelers during Bulgaria’s challenging winter months.
