Rising Costs Impact Annual Vehicle Inspections in Bulgaria

Sofia, Bulgaria – April 12, 2024: The annual technical inspection for vehicles in Bulgaria has seen a significant spike in costs, causing concern among motorists and industry experts alike. 

According to a recent report by “The Telegraph”, the price has surged to BGN 90, marking a notable increase from last year’s range of BGN 45 to BGN 60.

This surge in fees is attributed to several factors, as highlighted by Emil Panchev, the general secretary of the Union of Bulgarian Motorists (SBA), in an interview with “The Telegraph”. 

Panchev pointed out that one significant contributor is the rise in the remuneration of technicians conducting these inspections. 

While precise statistics on wage hikes remain elusive, Panchev notes that some technicians have experienced salary increases, while others have seen bonuses tied to the number of examinations performed and additional services provided by the SBA.

Furthermore, the mandatory connection of service stations to the Road Infrastructure Agency has added to the uptick in costs. Previously, many stations had not integrated their systems with the agency, necessitating a one-time connection fee of around BGN 1,300.

Roadworthiness testing is obligatory for all vehicles to ensure their fitness for the road. Failure to undergo the annual technical inspection (ATP) not only risks fines and suspension from driving but also unresolved malfunctions can lead to penalties ranging from BGN 50 to BGN 500. 

Additionally, insurers may refuse to cover damages in the event of an accident involving a vehicle without a valid technical examination, a serious consequence that underscores the importance of this issue.

Panchev revealed that in Sofia, the price for inspections at SBA repair shops has risen to BGN 70 since January. 

However, drivers with membership cards may receive the service for free, while others pay only an annual fee for the card. In non-union sites in Sofia, inspections range from BGN 85 to BGN 97.

The increased costs also extend to specific vehicle categories, such as taxis, buses, trucks, and jeeps, due to heavier wear and tear on inspection equipment. 

While some drivers can secure discounts through insurance policies or online bookings, others face lengthier wait times at testing sites.

Nevertheless, certain areas in Sofia still offer inspections at last year’s rates. For instance, drivers in the Lyulin and Mladost districts can obtain inspections for BGN 44 by scheduling appointments online.

With over 1 million registered cars in Sofia alone, the annual inspection process plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety. 

From checking documentation to evaluating the vehicle’s technical condition, these inspections are vital for maintaining the integrity of Bulgaria’s road infrastructure.

As motorists grapple with the increased costs, there are calls for measures to mitigate the financial burden while ensuring the effectiveness of the inspection process. 

The government and industry stakeholders may need to collaborate on solutions to strike a balance between affordability and safety in Bulgaria’s transportation sector.
